Start by grating the cooked beet, potatoes, hard-boiled eggs, and cooked carrots.

Dice the herring into small bits and finely chop the onion.

Layer grated potatoes at the base of a bowl and spread mayo over it. Next, add layers in this order: diced herring, chopped onion, more mayo, grated eggs, carrots, and beet. Cover everything with a final layer of mayo.

Swap the herring for smoked salmon if that’s more your style.

Dish out in a serving bowl or plate it individually using a round mold for a neat look.
