Combine the sugar and water in a small pan. Warm it over medium heat and stir until the sugar is gone. Toss in the lime zest, then take it off the heat.

Cover the sweet mix and set it aside for an hour. Once steeped, pour it through a fine strainer to get rid of the zest. (You can stash extra syrup in the fridge for up to a week.)

In your blender, mix 1/2 cup of the lime syrup, your fresh lime juice, tart cherry juice, some half-and-half if desired, and the ice.

Blend everything until you end up with a nice icy slush.

Split the frozen limeade into four 8-ounce glasses and drink up right away.
